Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic Principal Engineer to support our regional Development Team in London, focusing on civil and infrastructure engineering for land and property development projects.

You will work within a team driving the design development process and leading the preparation of design documentation, drawings, and technical reports to advise our clients, collaborators, and stakeholders from strategy through to construction. You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to a senior member of the Development Team.

Responsibilities

  • Leading day-to-day technical delivery of civil engineering consultancy services supporting clients through all project stages, from feasibility and concept design to planning, detailed design, and construction.
  • Providing technical expertise in drainage, SuDS, flood risk, highways, streetscape, earthworks, and utilities for various land, property, and infrastructure projects.
  • Providing project leadership on multiple multidisciplinary projects, acting as Project Manager when required.
  • Supporting and guiding a team of experienced and developing technical staff.
  • Engaging in high-profile client interactions, stakeholder management, design team collaboration, and project management.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered within budget, on schedule, and to required quality standards for technical and legal compliance.

  • The Development Team is a high-performing discipline within the Planning and Development business unit, comprising over 800 colleagues focused on project delivery throughout the project lifecycle.

  • We assist clients in sustainable development, land promotion, scheme implementation, and multidisciplinary design from concept to construction.
  • Our services include drainage, flood risk, SuDS, civil engineering, highways, utilities, energy planning, site appraisal, due diligence, and strategic planning advice.

Qualifications

  • Experience in highway design, drainage strategies, flood risk assessments, utility design, and knowledge of the development sector.
  • Design experience in development-related infrastructure.
  • Understanding of hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics, and construction design stages.
  • Ability to produce infrastructure masterplans, technical reports, design calculations, and drawings.
  • Knowledge of relevant design codes and standards, such as Water UK, Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, and SuDS Manual.
  • Strong communication skills and awareness of current technical and sustainability guidance.
  • Proficiency in relevant software like Micro Drainage, Info Drainage, Civil 3D, or PDS.
  • Experience liaising with clients, authorities, and design teams for approvals and statutory agreements.
  • Understanding of legal processes, planning, design, and contract procedures related to infrastructure provision.
  • Postgraduate experience or nearing Chartership, with relevant professional responsibility.
  • Willingness to become an ICE Supervising or Delegated Civil Engineer to support junior staff development.
