We are seeking applications from enthusiastic individuals to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) team as a 10 programmed activity (PA) Locum Consultant. The OMFS team forms part of the Dental Networked Services at Barts Health. This is an ideal career opportunity for anyone who is looking for a challenging opportunity to develop their existing skills, and to provide a first-class service to patients. The role is very busy and will include outpatient management, local and general anaesthetic treatment lists, management of theatre cases (including relevant ward, discharge and post-operative management), supporting service colleagues with management of 18-week RTT and urgent suspected cancer pathways, managing clinical governance processes as required within the OMFS department, delivery of service improvements and planning with operational and nursing colleagues and working closely with senior colleagues and clinicians to deliver exemplary care for our patients. The role will join the consultant on-call rota 1 in 8.

We are looking for an individual with an interest and experience in skin surgery and urgent suspected OMFS cancer pathways. The role will be based across the Royal London Dental Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The job description is a reflection of the current situation and will be reviewed regularly in discussion with the post-holder depending on the needs of the service in line with the Trust and departments goals.

Responsibility for Patients:

  1. To undertake duties in both minor and major Oral and Maxillofacial surgery necessitating the management of patients on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.
  2. Interest in developing the skin service at Whipps Cross.
  3. To participate in the consultant on call rota.
  4. To be involved in the departmental research activity.
  5. To participate in the audit of patient services and to assist them in the direction and management of patient services.
  6. To undertake other duties from time-to-time at the discretion of the department leads.
  7. Lead teaching for undergraduate and postgraduates.

Professional Registration

  • Registered with the GMC
  • Registration with the GDC

Professional Qualifications

  • Dental & Medical Qualification
  • MFDS or equivalent
  • FRCS OMFS
  • ATLS
  • Post Graduate Qualification in related subject

Clinical Experience

  • CCST in OMFS or within six months of qualification
  • Previous experience in a locum Consultant OMFS position
  • Post CCST experience

Clinical Skills

  • Ability to work unsupervised at consultant level
  • Willingness to take responsibility
  • Flexible and co-operative with colleagues

Teaching

  • Experience of teaching and evidence of incorporating feedback into practice
  • Post-graduate teaching qualification e.g. PGCert, MsC, PHD

Audit

  • Evidence of audit of own/department practice
  • Evidence of published audits

Personal and Leadership skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate in lay terms, technical information to patients
  • Able to communicate in verbal and written English to appropriate standard necessary
  • Awareness of Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety, Data Protection and Patient Care Legislations
