Civils General Foreman (Highways & Structures)
Overall Objective:
Our client is seeking an experienced Civils General Foreman to manage and supervise construction works on site, including overseeing sub-contractor trades. Reporting to the Site Agent/Project Manager, the ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality projects that adhere to health and safety standards, maintain programme schedules, and ensure projects are completed within budget and defect-free.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise large-scale civil engineering schemes, with a focus on Highways, Drainage, and Structures, ensuring high standards are maintained throughout.
- Manage day-to-day operations on-site, ensuring all activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the project’s objectives.
- Take responsibility for coordinating site teams, allocating resources, and ensuring works are completed according to approved method statements and risk assessments.
- Oversee the HSE compliance on-site by ensuring relevant inductions, toolbox talks, and briefings are conducted and maintained.
- Contribute to the planning, implementation, and execution of the project’s master programme, keeping the project on track and managing any challenges.
- Ensure that all works are completed on time, within budget, and meet the client’s quality expectations.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in the delivery of civil engineering projects, particularly in Highways, Drainage, and Structures.
- Strong understanding of construction activities such as road construction, drainage systems, deep excavation, and temporary works.
- Competence in managing a team, including sub-contractors, and effectively coordinating with the wider project team.
- Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
- Must hold a valid CSCS card (minimum gold standard).
- SMSTS qualified, with a strong understanding of Health and Safety protocols.
- Confined Space Training and Street Works Qualifications are desirable.
- First Aid at Work Certificate and a clean driving licence are preferred.
Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all operations comply with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Conduct inductions and briefings for site personnel and ensure compliance with all safety protocols.
- Implement and maintain high health and safety standards on-site, actively promoting a culture of safety and awareness.
- Take on the role of Temporary Works Supervisor, ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with approved safety procedures.
Technical Skills:
- Knowledgeable in civil engineering techniques, including drainage, roadworks, and structures.
- Ability to troubleshoot day-to-day project delivery issues and promote best practices.
- Assist with the promotion of efficiencies and innovation within the project delivery process.
Project Management & Progress:
- Assist in updating project programmes, ensuring all activities align with the master schedule.
- Monitor and report daily work progress, ensuring that work is completed on time and within the required quality standards.
- Proactively manage resources, ensuring the appropriate allocation of personnel and equipment.
- Maintain up-to-date records of works completed, including daily diaries and work production reports.

Commercial Responsibilities:
- Oversee the management of equipment hire and off-hire, ensuring resources are available when needed.
- Work closely with the Quantity Surveyor to track project costs and assist with Monthly CVR reporting.
- Ensure works are delivered on time and within budget, challenging inefficiencies and driving cost-effective methods.
- Assist in the management of sub-contractor relationships and provide support to the wider team in managing external resources.
Quality Control:
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, and third parties, ensuring smooth communication and timely project delivery.
- Maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, internal teams, and sub-contractors.
- Take responsibility for identifying and resolving any defects in the works, ensuring timely rectification.
- Ensure all work meets high standards and complies with the project’s quality requirements.
